How high and how far can a drone fly?
Two different questions get mixed together. How high is mostly a legal ceiling. How far is battery, radio, and whether you can still see the aircraft. The spec sheet (35 minutes, 10 km video range) is not a flight plan. If you are still learning the sticks, start with how to fly a drone.
How high: the 400-foot rule
In the US, recreational and most Part 107 flights stay at or below 400 feet above ground level in uncontrolled airspace. You may fly higher over a tall structure in limited Part 107 cases, remaining within 400 ft of that structure — that is not a loophole for buzzing a skyline. Controlled airspace (near airports) needs authorization such as LAANC, and the ceiling there is whatever that authorization says, often much lower.
National parks, stadium TFRs, and city rules can make the legal altitude zero because you cannot take off at all. Check the no-fly map, then the park sign.
How far: line of sight beats the brochure
Most consumer drones advertise kilometers of transmission range. FAA recreational rules still expect visual line of sight. If the drone is a dot — or behind a building — you are past the useful, and usually the legal, limit. Wind on the outbound leg also means the return burns more battery than the going-out leg.
Practical far: stay close enough to see orientation, keep 30%+ battery for the trip home in wind, and never fly beyond where you could land immediately if video drops.
What actually stops a flight
- Airspace — airports, restricted areas, and TFRs. Distance on the map is not permission.
- Wind at altitude — stronger than at the launch point. See wind and drone flight.
- Battery chemistry in the cold — range shrinks fast below freezing.
- Obstacles and people — a long straight-line range is useless over a highway.
